(安田 靖春 Yasuda Yasuharu?) is a 2nd year point guard for Shohoku High School Basketball Team. He is the backup point guard to Ryota Miyagi, and is the starting PG during Ryota's absence.

Ryota calls him Yasu.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Yasuda is shown to be a timid, but good-hearted person. Yasuda's love for basketball is shown most when he's on the bench, watching his team play. During the second match of the qualifying tournament, Yasuda was giving advice from the bench to Sakuragi when he scored his first foul (though this was not well received).

Although Hanamichi picks on him, he is no pushover, as demonstrated when he stood up to Hisashi Mitsui and Tetsuo when they were attempting to get the Shohoku team banned from competition for fighting.

Thanks to his mild and calm character he can manage to calm things down when the tension on the court starts to heat up. One example of this is when Anzai sent Yasuda into the match against Toyotama in place of Sakuragi after all five starters were infuriated by Toyotama's provocative tactics.

Plot[]

Yasuda makes his first appearance when he and Tetsushi Shiozaki accidentally hit Sakuragi in the face with a basketball outside of Shohoku High School's basketball gym, causing a bloody nose. Unfortunately for them both, Sakuragi was at the verge of exploding in anger due to his absolute hate for basketball at the time (right after the Rukawa incident on the school rooftop); thus, he immediately smacked both Yasuda and Tetsushi. Sakuragi's friends tried to stop him, but they also got headbutted. Fortunately, Takenori Akagi arrived just in time to stop Sakuragi from causing any more harm to Yasuda and Shiozaki.

When Sakuragi pulls Akagi's pants down during their 1-on-1 challenge, both Yasuda and Shiozaki try to calm Akagi down. Unfortunately, both of them get smacked on the head by Akagi before he resumes his duel with Sakuragi.

During the Shohoku basketball team's orientation, Yasuda mentions that there's one more 2nd year who is currently in the hospital and thus is not present (referring to Ryota Miyagi).

Yasuda started in Shohoku's Freshmen vs. Upper Classmen scrimmage when Coach Anzai first visited practice to gauge the new freshmen players. Yasuda wore #5 for this scrimmage. When Akagi dunked over two freshmen players (Kentaro Iishi and Toki Kuwata) during a fastbreak, Yasuda exclaimed "Gorilla dunk!" before being smacked on the head by Akagi.

Yasuda was the starting point guard in Shohoku's practice match against Ryonan High School. He was given the number 6 jersey. As soon as Akagi won the tipoff, Yasuda collected the ball, but immediately lost possession to Tomoyuki Uekusa which eventually led to Ryoji Ikegami's first basket. Yasuda continued to cause multiple turnovers throughout the early parts of the match while Shohoku's morale was low. However, he picked up his intensity once Akagi rejuvenated the team's morale with a dunk. Yasuda then scored Shohoku's following 2 points with a fastbreak layup off of Akagi's pass. In the second half, Yasuda got smacked in the head by Sakuragi after passing the ball to his face (even though it was Sakuragi's fault for dazing off while looking for Haruko Akagi). Yasuda also scored a 3-pointer to catch up to Ryonan 70-74.

When Miyagi returned to school after being released from the hospital, Yasuda and Shiozaki both explained to Kuwata why Ryota ended up in the hospital. They all worry that he might cause trouble and be suspended again, especially since Sakuragi (and his friends) is as notorious. When Ryota returns to practice, he immediately asks Yasuda for a 1-on-1 session.

When Mitsui and his gang invade the basketball gym, Yasuda restrains Sakuragi from retaliating. He then steps in front of Sakuragi and asks Mitsui and his gang to leave them alone since they have a decent team and have a chance at the national tournament this year. But his bravery backfires and he gets punched by Mitsui.

Yasuda started Shohoku's first match of the Inter High Regional tournament against Miuradai due to Coach Anzai punishing the participants who fought during Mitsui's invasion of the Shohoku gym by benching them (Mitsui, Sakuragi, Rukawa, and Miyagi). He subbed out during the first half when Coach Anzai eventually subbed in the aforementioned players. When Sakuragi committed his 3rd foul, Yasuda tried to calm Sakuragi down; however, this only angered Sakuragi even more as he snapped back at Yasuda while mocking Tetsuya Naito's bald head, which made the entire stadium laugh.

Yasuda celebrated at the end of the match against Takezato, and was one of the 5 players in uniform along with Miyagi, Rukawa, Mitsui, and Shiozaki at the referee's whistle. Since Sakuragi did not play from oversleeping and Akagi subbed off early in the match due to his ankle recovery, it is likely that Yasuda played and finished the match even though his participation was not shown.

Yasuda watched Kainan v. Ryonan with his team after Shohoku's win against Takezato. Yasuda remained with his team until the end of the match after all of Shohoku's starters (along with Kiminobu Kogure and Ayako who accompanied Akagi) left early. Yasuda along with the rest of his team eventually joined Akagi and co. at the hospital and reported the match result.

During Shohoku v. Ryonan at the regional tournament, Ayako angrily swung her fan against Yasuda while yelling at Sakuragi for getting hit in the face with the basketball from not paying attention. Yasuda and Kogure restrained Ayako together to calm her down. Shohoku won the match to finish 2nd in the regional tournament qualify for the nationals.

In the National Inter High Tournament, Yasuda substituted in for Sakuragi during Shohoku vs Toyotama in the first half. Per Coach Anzai's instructions, Yasuda became the primary ball handler (rather than Miyagi) and slowed the pace of the game. He altered the game flow toward half-court sets, directing the offense to primarily play through Akagi and eat up the shot clock; this in turn nullified Toyotama's strong suite of transition-based run-and-gun playstyle. Yasuda also did not allow the brash taunting of Toyotama fans to affect him and stuck to Coach Anzai's game plan. He was integral in not allowing Toyotama to gain too big of a lead by the end of the first half (only a 6-point Toyotama lead at 28-34).

Yasuda was rooming with Sakuragi during the tournament. During the morning prior to Shohoku's match against Sannoh, Sakuragi woke up early and was swooning over a photo of Haruko. Meanwhile, Yasuda was still asleep and having a nightmare of Akagi yelling at him in his dream. When Yasuda suddenly reacted in his sleep, Sakuragi got startled and accidentally crumpled his picture of Haruko.

Abilities[]

In a game where Shohoku was down because they were timid and the pace was too fast, Coach Anzai puts in Yasuda because of his great ability to slow the game down and allow his players to think.
