Koichiro Nango (南郷 洸一郎, Nangō Kōichirō) is the center player from team Tsukubu during the second movie. He actually made a cameo in the anime series where he was knocked by Hanamachi Sakuragi during the climax in the second movie.

Appearance[]

Koichiro's anime depiction in the movie and his cameo in the anime series, he had short black hair with full fringes. His fringes are dyed in gold highlights (as this style is later used by other players in different anime and most media) and black eyes. In his anime concept, his black hair is in short length with a slick back in a style of mullet and has two fringes at the center of his head.

His initial appearance has him wearing a standard Tsukubu summer school uniform. Although in the anime series, they are depicted wearing their winter school uniforms are in a lighter shades of sea green; he wears a white short sleeved button-up shirt with a single pocket on the left chest, It has light sea green linings at the edge of his short sleeves and a pale purple neck tie on the collar, sea green school pants and black school shoes and white socks

During training with his team and their coach Kawasaki and during off courts, he wears a blue and pale yellow jersey jacket which is open to reveal his white short sleeved loose undershirt and a matching blue and pale yellow trousers.

Personality[]

According to Kazumi Kawasaki, the former student of Mitsuyoshi Anzai, Nango is very lazy whenever they do basketball practices and had easily noticed his actions of being a playboy who likes to find a new girlfriend which invigorates himself in training basketball especially in their match against Shohoku. The reason for this is because he immediately had a crush on Haruko Akagi after he saved the ball from not shooting inside the basket by a making a slam dunk in a motorcycle helmet and also begins a short rivalry with Hanamichi Sakuragi. Like Kaede Rukawa and Takenori Akagi, he is able to withstand Sakuragi's powerful headbutt, leading him to counter him with the same headbutt a few times. In basketball matches, he is the only center from Tsukubu who leads the team after Tomokazu Godai was immediately ejected in the game for his temperamental behavior by making an intentional foul towards Sakuragi and both he and his whole team themselves were outplayed by Shohoku. Nango also shows his dislike towards Rukawa who also called him an idiot.

Plot[]

Nango meets Sakuragi after gaining a crush towards Haruko who practices basketball all by herself as he saves her ball by shooting the basketball dunk while in a motorcycle helmet. They started their rivalry when Sakuragi angrily headbutts him after seeing him had a crush on Haruko as he also headbutts him in retaliation after Sakuragi's friends discovered that Nango is able to withstand Sakuragi's headbutt just like both Rukawa and Akagi. During the best of 8 game before facing Shoyo, He makes fun out of Sakuragi while he's on the bench and later when he replaces Kogure to play the game, He and Sakuragi are seen bickering when they wanted to face Rukawa after the latter calls them two idiots. Sakuragi manages to get another rebound but knocking Nango to the ground results him in getting a fifth foul and ends up being fouled out. In the end of the movie, Nango congratulates them for winning as Haruko arrives to praise Sakuragi's team victory as both ends up fighting each other just for Haruko. In the anime series, Nango can be seen grunting when Sakuragi knocks him through the ground and gains him the fifth foul which it was seen in the second movie. Sakuragi also calls him as the "Golden-Haired Monkey" (Unggoy na may mantsyang buhok in the Filipino Dub) before team Tsukubu takes their time-out.

Trivia[]

  • In most English subtitles in the Japanese Dub, his surname is mistakenly written as Rango instead of Nango.
  • Vincent Gutierrez who provided the main voices of Hisashi Mitsui, Mitsuyoshi Anzai, Nobunaga Kiyota and Yohei Mito also provided his voice for Koichiro Nango in the Filipino Dub and Nango is much sounded like Meisuke "Nube" Nueno, the main protagonist of the manga and anime series, Jigoku Sensei Nube in which Gutierrez also voices Nube in the Filipino Dub.
