Haruko teaching Hanamichi how to do a Layup
After being unsuccessful in learning how to do the layup shot, the following day, Hanamichi heads over to the nearby outside basketball court to practice independently. Haruko, while jogging, sees Hanamichi and greets him. She is impressed at Sakuragi's work ethic and praises that he is indeed taking the sport seriously. Haruko then requests Hanamichi if she can show him how to do the layup shot properly. Sakuragi feels excited and agrees. Upon her first attempt, Haruko, while dribbling, accidentally slips and falls to the ground. Hanamichi approaches her, sees the wound, and requests her that it is alright and he will try to figure out the layup shot on his own.
Haruko insists and, on her second attempt, she properly demonstrates the layup shot. An impressed Hanamichi witnesses it and praises her. Haruko feels delighted at her attempt and requests Sakuragi to try doing it. Rukawa bikes from his residence and coincidentally heads to the same outside basketball court. Upon arrival sees Haruko and Hanamichi. Instead of meeting them, Rukawa decides to hide in the bushes and furiously sneak peeks on them. Hanamichi asks Haruko why he hasn't been successfully able to attempt the layup shot. Rukawa quietly states it is called poor ball handling. Haruko encourages a depressed Hanamichi and informs him that nobody can succeed in the beginning. Upon hearing, Hanamichi feels happy that Haruko is a friendly and inspiring individual that empowers others. Hanamichi regains his confidence and then tries to attempt again for the layup. Before trying it, Hanamichi recalls when he saw Rukawa showing him the layup shot at their schools' gym and noticed that he jumped a bit higher when attempting this shot.
Hanamichi Sakuragi first successful layup attempt
Upon remembering Rukawa's layup shot technique, Hanamichi encourages himself to jump a bit higher. A serious Hanamichi tries to attempt the layup shot again. On seeing Haruko notices that this time especially Hanamichi's form is better than before. However, on attempting, Hanamichi forgets his hand movement and missed up the timing of the layup. Upon his futile effort, a confused Hanamichi informs Haruko about his mistake. He ignored his hand movement, and this one doesn't count. Haruko becomes confused and says he didn't pay close attention to the ball in his hand. Haruko then becomes excited and tells Hanamichi that he just told her his primary mistake. Haruko further states that his problem lies in the strength of his hand. Now she understands what her brother was referring to when he said to put the ball in gently, referring to the weak hand grip. Haruko then recalls when Takenori gave her advice on the layup shot. Her knees movement is too stiff. The first thing you do on attempting is keeping your knees flexible, jump higher, and put the ball in gently.
Hanamichi becomes happy with Haruko's advice. He tells himself to put the ball in gently and do not throw the ball hard towards the rim. Upon remembering her brother's guidance, Haruko gives her opinion that she feels envious of people who can jump higher. Due to being an average height individual, she will never be able to experience the thrill of doing things taller people can do. This time a confident Hanamichi tells Haruko that he will succeed. Haruko cheerfully wishes Hanamichi the best of luck. While attempting the layup shot, Hanamichi instructs himself to keep his knees flexible, jump higher, and place the ball gently in the rim. On following Haruko's advice, Hanamichi successfully demonstrates the layup shot. Both of them celebrate. A jealous Rukawa stares at them. He curses Hanamichi and counts every minute when will both of them leave. So, he can use the court.
