The Challenging Commoner's Shot (庶民のシュートは難しい, Shomin no Shūto wa Muzukashii) is the 20th chapter of the Slam Dunk manga series.
Summary[]
After receiving a scolding from his Captain, Hanamichi tries to demonstrate the layup shot. However, he is unsuccessful, and upon seeing his futile attempt, Mito and his colleagues tease him. Hanamichi then furiously instructs his friends to leave the court. Rukawa successfully demonstrates the layup shot again. Upon witnessing, the three fangirls of his cheer him on. Sakuragi tries the layup shot for the second time and remains unsuccessful. A confused, Hanamichi talks to himself and questions as to why isn't the ball going in. A serious Takenori stares at Hanamichi and states that he is disappointed with his effort that he can't even correctly attempt a commoner's shot (layup). The three fangirls of Rukawa make fun of Hanamichi. Haruko again goes into an argument with them and responds that nobody is perfect in the beginning.

Takenori once more requests Rukawa to demonstrate the layup shot again. Being a bit jealous of Rukawa's skills, Hanamichi angrily throws the ball at him and jokingly tells everyone that the ball accidentally slipped from his hands. Takenori furiously smacks Sakuragi in the head and informs him that Rukawa is trying to help him. A confused Hanamichi attempts to do the layup shot again and remains unsuccessful. Ayako requests her coach if he can give Hanamichi some advice. Anzai-sensei responds that Takenori is handling the situation pretty well, and he will let Akagi teach Hanamichi the basics of the layup shot. As Takenori is busy explaining to Hanamichi about the layup, Kogure requests Rukawa continue his training. Sakuragi again throws the ball at Rukawa and tells everyone that it accidentally slipped. Being angry, Rukawa throws back the ball at Hanamichi and makes the similar excuse that basketball slipped from his hand. A furious Hanamichi stares at him. Takenori then instructs Sakuragi to stop being a showoff and try to relax his shoulders and concentrate on the basketball hoop when attempting the layup shot. Upon listening to his Captain's advice, Hanamichi apologizes to Rukawa and politely requests him to demonstrate the layup shot. Rukawa accepts his apology and attempts the layup shot. As he is dribbling, Hanamichi furiously throws the entire basketball cart at him. The two then get into a friendly bout. Takenori sees their childish behavior and instructs both of them to stop fighting.
